Below is a list of frequently asked questions about AUAV’s Fly Your Own Drone™ program. If you still have further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we can discuss your needs.

Q: Do I need a license to fly my own drone?

A: Prior to September 29th 2016, anyone flying a drone other than for fun required both a license and an operating permit from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). From 1st October 2016 though the regulations have been amended to allow unlicensed operation of drones which weigh less than 2kg with certain restrictions, and also larger drones on your own property. More information on the regulations are available from this CASA E-Learning module

Q: Can’t I save a lot of money by just buying my own drone online?

A: If you only need a drone and you’re happy to do all the rest yourself, that might be the right choice for you. Our FYOD™ packages are a complete solution to safe aerial data capture and delivery, and the drone itself is only a small part of that.

Q: Why do you offer packages with 1 or 2 drones? Why would I need 2?

A: As a professional drone service provider, we recommend you always have 2 drones on hand if you are to capture data in a reliable manner. Sometimes accidents happen, and sometimes there are technical glitches in this new technology, so your best bet to ensure you get the job done is to have a second aircraft on hand. It is of course up to you though, we have packages with 1 or 2 drones, depending on your requirements.

Q: Which is a better choice, multi-rotor or fixed-wing drones?

A: The answer to that depends on your needs: fixed-wing drones are able to survey much larger areas than multi-rotor drones, because they fly like a normal aeroplane the power is only used to push them along, not keep them up in the air, so they are much more efficient. However, they are more expensive, need a bit more training, and you need a bit more space on site to launch and land them. Multi-rotor drones have the advantage of being able to take off and land vertically in a very small space, and can also hover to take oblique photos looking all around, not just straight down like a fixed-wing drone. This means you can also use it for taking aerial photos and video as well as mapping, but when mapping they can only cover a relatively small area. Get in touch to discuss your needs, and we can make a recommendation.

Q: How accurate will my data be?

A: The survey data accuracy will very much depend on the methods employed. With the right flight planning and Aero Point placement data accuracy will be approximately 5cm in the x,y and z. Our support team has considerable experience in flight planning for the collection of reliable accurate survey data and will provide guidance to ensure the best results are attained.

Q: Are drones dangerous?

A: Like many things, drones can be an incredibly useful tool or cause danger, depending on how they are used. The drones provided in the FYOD™ program are relatively small and lightweight, so the risk is minimised, and with the right training you will be flying safely and confidently. The key is to know the limitations and give them the respect they deserve.

Q: Can we add and remove items when purchasing the FYOD™ packages?

A: Yes, the packages are our recommended collection of components in order to give you the best chance of success using drones in your organisation, but we can modify them to your needs, and even do a custom ‘pick and mix’ collection for you. Let us know what you’re after and we’ll get you a quote. We don’t just sell the equipment however, as that is only a starting point, we want to guarantee your success, so can only provide complete packages of equipment, software, training and support.

Q: How do we purchase?

A: You will soon be able to purchase on the AUAV website, with credit card or Electronic Funds Transfer payment options.
